Suicidal Prevention
Lotus Heart with financial support from SveO SKV (Svenska Kvinnors Vänsterförbund) conducted a study to explore the magnitude of suicide and factors associated with it in close coordination with local government and other relevant stakeholders.
Based on the review of police record a ward with high prevalence of suicide was selected for the study.
A Focus Group Discussion with line listing exercise was done in the selected ward (cluster) engaging multiple stakeholders to explore the magnitude and determinants of suicide.
The exercise made the participants recall the past three years, disaggregate the demographic characteristics of the suicide cases (age, sex, occupation, education status, marital status, occupation and relationship with head of household), type of method used for suicide and potential reasons.
Analyses of the line listing exercise revealed 22 suicidal cases from the selected ward only in past three years. Suicide was equally prevalent in both sex and majority being married; preferred method was hanging followed by poisoning, similarly, preferred time was night (around 60%).
The potential reasons mentioned were chaos in family, use of alcohol and drugs, low financial condition, high expectation from family, being too ambitious, failure in love life, easily availability of pesticides as majority of the people are engaged in agriculture, and misuse of social media.
Surprisingly nobody reported mental illness as one of the reasons for committing suicide in the community. Based on the findings of the study, Lotus Heart with financial support from SveO SKV (Svenska Kvinnors Vänsterförbund) continued it efforts and have move a step ahead to work together with an aim to change the people’s perception about mental health and suicide through awareness programs engaging local government, media and schools in the catchment area and capacity building of primary health workers to improve the accessibility to mental health services at local level.
