Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche , one of the greatest ever yogi and teacher in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, has shunned institutional and political involvement during his whole life, choosing instead to live the life of a wandering yogi. He was also greatly concerned with maintaining strict discipline in the context of the Dzogchen view. He has advocated vegetarianism and has a yearly practice of ransoming the lives of thousands of animals in India. In addition to his emphasis on the union of view and conduct, Rinpoche also stresses the practice of retreat.
Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche settled finally in Pharping, building a first Buddhist monastery of its time in the Yangleshod, where once Guru Padmasambhava himself has done the meditational practices. Chatral Rinpoche has spent more than half of his life in solitary practices and retreats, rejecting hundreds of proposals to visit the Western countries, preferring to remain unattached to the worldly activities. He is famed for his unique behavior – combination of wrathful purity of mind with a deepest compassion and an expansive wisdom, short cut and down to earth extremely clear speech, surprisingly humble way of living and unpretentious Dharma activities, added to the ability of foreseeing, forecasting and much more, clearly manifesting the similar to Guru Padmasambhava himself qualities.
Actually, his daughter , Semo Saraswati Lama Rinpoche is proceeding with his work and takes care of the Gonpa in Pharping as well as all the nuns, monks, Yogis and Yoginis , and also many animals that live there. Semo Saraswati Lama is considered to be an emanation of the Dakini Sera Khandro.
